Market or Grocery Store

So, my hubby always says he has to go to the Market.  Today I finally asked him why he uses that word.  He said he grew up using the word Super Market.    I told him that if he were in Utah and said the word "market" some people might think he meant something like the "farmers market." I told Hubby that we used the word "grocery store." Hubby said that word was used when referring to a Mom and Pop store.

I had to laugh at this because I was so "bugged" whenever he used the word Market. Now it won't bother me as much since he explained why he uses this word. \

I like to think  that MY word choice is always correct!  WRONG!!  Don't we all have words or sayings that we grew up with and use that might be different from the next person?

I had a sore neck the other day, probably from sleeping funny.  I posed in FB that I had a "crick" in my neck. I then asked if this was even a word. My friend who is living in Utah, wrote a comment back to me that "crick" is definitely a word used in Utah.  Well, my own father used that word, as did my grandmother and uncle, to mean "creek."  Creek = a small amount of water, flowing down stream.    Crick = a small amount of water, flowing downstream or a sore neck.

See what I mean?!?!?!

Well, there you have it.  A simple question ends up as a post on my blog.  Crick or creek, market or grocery store.  It's all the same!!

Stephanie

AVATAR

Joe and took the plunge and saw the 3D version of this movie. Let';s just say, we loved it.  Our behinds where kinda tired when it was over, but it was worth it.

We wanted to see the 2:00 movie but at 12:30 it was already sold out.  We bought tickets for the 3:30 movie and were the first in line!!  We ate lunch and still had about 1 1/2 hours to wait.  We asked the ticket taker to let us in early and we would just sit and wait.  He wasn't going to but Joe pleaded with him since I had my broken foot.  The guy let us in so I sat on a bench in front of the theater.  When people started to line up, Joe sat on the floor to save our place.  (Thanks, Joe)  This ensured we got great seats and no one ran us over, trying to find a seat.

This plot reminded me of "Dances with Wolves."  That's all I will say because I don't want to give away the story.  Anyway, I highly recommend you watch this movie with the 3D glasses.  There is a surcharge to basically "rent" the glasses but I think it's so worth it.

What do other people think?  Please give me your opinion.

Aloha for another day,
Stephanie

Sunday Afternnon

It is 3:10 pm on Sunday afternoon.  I am excited because tomorrow is a holiday!  YEAH!!  I have had a great day so far.  I got up to go to church and thought I would be late, so I nixed the make up.  Turns out that I got there right about 9:00 am and had to wait an hour for STAKE CONFERENCE to start.  haha..serves me right for not going last week, even if i was laid up with a broken foot!

I saw some people that I know.  The Koizumi's from Mililani.  He was the Stake President back in the late '70s and early '80s.  I also saw Sis. Holm, a missionary from Utah, who was also serving in Kailua Ward when we lived there. She is now in the Hawaii Kai Ward. It is a small world and you better not burn bridges, cuz the gangplank will come back to hit you in the butt.

I am watching, on and off, the news on Haiti.  It is so awful to hear about the looting, the fighting and yet, there are some wonderful stories of finding people alive after 108 hours.  I can't even imagine what these poor people are going through.  You can't blame the people for looking for food and water and doing anything to get it.  However, I am hearing about a mob that dragged a naked man through the streets, while beating him and then lynching him by setting him on fire.  I just hope if I am ever in a situation like that, I will keep my humanity and not resort to such violence.  The Prophets of old and new alike have said that if we are prepared, we shouldn't fear.  It reminds me that I need to beef up my food storage, especially water.  When we had our house with the pool, I wasn't thinking about water.  But now that we don't have that pool, the more water we store the better off we'll all be.

I saw a poll on cnn.com asking a question about giving financial help to Haiti.  57% of the people who answered this poll said they wouldn't donate anything to any charity.  I was really, really surprised at this.  I thought the spirit of American people was different and that more would give financial aid.  I'm hoping that this poll was just a small portion of people and in reality, more people will help out.

Our main speaker in Stake Conference was Elder Clayton, one of the 7 Presidents of the Seventy, related to us that although we are living in difficult times, the fast offerings have risen.  He said at first, the amount of people giving dipped a little, but now that number has risen, as has the amount given.  To me, that is at the heart of the Gospel message to love one another and take care of each other.

He also told another story about visiting Paraguay in 2002, during a terrible economic crisis. There was 80% unemployment in some areas of the Country.  Elder Clayton met with 6 Stake Presidents and asked them what was going right in their stakes.  After hearing what they had to say, Elder Clayton was prompted to ask them this following question:  Tell me, of all your members who are paying a full tithe, giving a generous fast offering, holding FHE every Monday, reading the scriptures, praying as families, magnifying their callings and doing their Home or Visiting Teaching, is there anyone of these who can't take care of themselves and solve their own problems?  Well, not one of the 6 Stake Presidents could name one family.

Elder Clayton reminded us that if we are obedient and doing what we should be doing, especially paying a full tithe, then we will be blessed.    When he was speaking, it was very quiet and reverent, and my observation was that everyone was paying attention and listening to what he had to say.

I am glad I attended Church today.  I've never gone to a meeting or church where I said later, Oh that was a waste of my time.  The Spirit was there and I am thankful to have felt it.  Oh and the Honolulu Stake has the best Choir!!  Really, it was fantastic.  They sang the closing hymn, "I Believe in Christ" which was as if Angels were singing, too!

Have a great day and week to come,
Aloha,
Stephanie

Television

Ok.  So I am laid up with a broken foot.  I am supposed to keep my foot elevated and ice it every night after work.  I am happy to do this. What else am I supposed to do?  I watch TV every night and it's getting really OLD!  The worst part of TV?  COMMERCIALS.  I am so ready to punch that AT & T guy, Luke Wilson, in the face.  I want to kick the Progressive lady in the butt, all the way to Timbuctoo.  The lady on the CW who wants to just love her husband's daughter from an ex-girlfriend.

There was one commercial I watched 29 years ago that didn't offend.  I was pregnant with DD#1 and very, very, very sick.  I mean so sick I couldn't eat or drink liquids of any kind.  One day I had the TV on to take my mind away from my nausea.  A commercial came on for Cristco Shortening.  Usually food commercials sent me righ to the bathroom.

This commercial showed someone making an apple pie.  No one was talking; only music was playing.  It was calm and soothing music.  I watched it and didn't fell any nausea coming on.  That made the commercial a hit in my book.  I'll always remember that commercial!  It wasn't offensive.  It didn't bug me.  It didn't make me nauseated.  It was soothing and a beautiful thing to watch.

Commercial makers - bring back good commercials!~!

Look What I've Done to this BLOG!!

I am experimenting with different colors, etc. It might all change tomorrow.

I want to say thank you to all the bloggers out there with public blogs.  I figured out that you can hit "next blog" and read random blogs.  I love it!  See, you can teach old dogs new tricks.

Keep up with the blogs because I really like to read them.  Thanks for sharing your life's experiences with the rest of the world.  I think we all have some of the same problems, issues and blessings that life throws at us.  I have especially enjoyed reading what other families do for Christmas.

A lot of us share the same values and same traditions.  We love to live each Christmas in our pajamas!!

Anyway, the Mr. bought me Super Mario Bros. WII so I'm going to attempt to play it.  See you in the blogoshere!!

It's Saturday!

I have to get off my feet as I broke my 5th metatarsal on New Year's Eve. I was so dumb and didn't go to the ER. I went to my family doctor on the 5th and he took X-Rays and now I have to see the Ortho on Monday. I am mad at myself for not going to the ER. If I had gone in the beginning, I could have taken care of all this "doctor" business right then and there. Now I have to take time off from work, etc. etc. and drive over the Pali to see my doctor.

Since we have moved to Honolulu, I am thinking it might be time to find a doctor and dentist in town. Otherwise I will have to go back to Kailua.

I am watching football today. Just finished watching the Jets win and now I am watching the Eagles and the Cowboys. Go Eagles!!

I was in the office all week and had time to think about life, people and things. I thought about my friend, Elaine, who passed away this past October. I also thought about my Dad and how he was a river guide for Colorado River and Trail Expeditions. I looked on the CRATE website and found the trip that my daughter's and I did the summer of 2000. It was the 5 day Green River/Desolation Canyon trip. That trip was just so wonderful, to say the least. I was looking at the different river trips and saw the Alaskan trip. My Dad was on the first trip that CRATE went on.

Now I am getting up there in age and feeling like life is passing me by. All I do is go to work, come home and watch TV and then go to bed. Every day is the same. Hmmm. What is wrong with that? So boring! Of course there are days when I have an outing with friends but typically, every day is the same thing. I was going to start walking after work but now that I broke my foot, I'll have to put a hold on walking.

SOOOO, I was thinking about taking that Alaskan river trip. It only costs $3500 (choke), and I doubt that includes my air fare to Alaska. But its a 11 or 12 day trip this summer. Wouldn't that be so fantastic!!!! I'm not sure how many vacation days I'll have by then, but I can see.

I am going back to Utah in April, to see DD#3 graduate from College. That trip is a MUST!!! But after that, I will have vacation days I'll need to use. So, if not this year, then certainly next year!

But wait, in 2011 I was thinking about going to Scotland, England and Ireland to do family history. OH what to do, what to do. Either trip will be something new and fantastic.

If you want to see the website, I believe it is CRATEINC.com. This is a wonderful outfit to go with and I highly recommend this Desolation Canyon trip. DD#4 was 10 years old and the oldes DD was 19. A great trip for the family!!

Now I think I will post about my friend, Elaine, another day. Just a teaser....there will NEVER be another friend/character like Elaine..

Aloha,
Stephanie
